Why I stopped teaching code and started teaching math

My highest income from freelance teaching coding and related stuff was $8000 in 1 month. And I worked less than 30 hours a week.

So why quit such a high paying job? Well, it wasn’t enough money.

First, in Singapore, tech education is not the biggest part of the private and enrichment education market.

The biggest part of the private and enrichment market: tutoring and private education (private universities and schools):

The Learning Lab — Advent International reportedly bought a significant stake for around S$300 million in 2014.

Canadian International School Singapore — acquired by China Maple Leaf Educational Systems in 2020 in a deal valued at approximately S$680 million.

Zenith Education grew from S$6.7m revenue in 2022 to reportedly more than S$30m annual revenue by 2026.

Wang Learning Centre made S$23.17m revenue and S$12.01m profit in 2023, before Sun Venture acquired a minority stake in 2025.

I Can Read sold approximately 55% to Tower Capital for US$50m (~S$67m)

And also, spending of private tuition is increasing:

Singapore families spent S$1.8 billion on private tuition in 2023, up from S$1.4 billion in 2018 and S$1.1 billion in 2013. (The Straits Times)

However, I haven’t seen any news saying any enrichment centres teaching coding have reach the levels of Learning Lab ($300 million) or Canadian International School Singapore ($680 million).

I’ve seen university students sharing on social media claiming they are earning $10,000 a month as a side hustle (allegedly).

Therefore, it’s a better path for me, to run a tuition business.
